Share Your Plex Library with Friends and Family
  1. 1

Enable remote access on your Plex server

Before anyone outside your home can access your library, your server must be reachable from the internet.

    1. Open Plex Web (/:32400/web)
    2. Go to Settings > Remote Access
    3. Click "Enable Remote Access"
    4. If the status shows a green checkmark, you are good. Plex configured port forwarding automatically via UPnP.
    5. If it shows a red X, you need to set up port forwarding manually (next step).

Note: Your server must be running for friends to access your library. If your computer sleeps, they lose access.

  2. 2

Set up port forwarding (if automatic fails)

If Plex could not configure remote access automatically, you need to forward port 32400 on your router.

    1. Find your server's local IP address:
       - Mac: System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi/Ethernet > Details > IP Address
       - Windows: Open CMD, type ipconfig, look for IPv4 Address
       - Linux: Run ip addr or hostname -I
    2. Log into your router (usually http://192.168.1.1 or http://10.0.0.1)
    3. Find Port Forwarding (sometimes under Advanced, NAT, or Firewall)
    4. Create a new rule:
       - External port: 32400
       - Internal port: 32400
       - Protocol: TCP
       - Internal IP: your server's IP from step 1
    5. Save and go back to Plex > Settings > Remote Access. It should show green now.

UniFi users: In the UniFi Network app, go to Settings > Firewall & Security > Port Forwarding and add the rule there.

  3. 3

    Invite friends and family

    1. Open Plex Web and click the person icon (top right) or go to Settings > Users & Sharing
    2. Click "Invite Friend"
    3. Enter their email address (they need a free Plex account)
    4. Choose which libraries to share (you can share Movies but not Music, for example)
    5. Click "Send Invite"
Your friend will receive an email with a link to accept. Once they accept:
    - They can download the Plex app on their phone, TV, or computer
    - Your shared libraries appear in their sidebar under "More"
    - They stream directly from your server
  4. 4

    Manage shared users and restrictions

Go to Settings > Users & Sharing to manage access:

    - Restrict libraries: Choose which libraries each user can see
    - Restrict content: Set rating limits (e.g., no R-rated content for kids)
    - Limit simultaneous streams: Prevent one user from using all your bandwidth
    - Remove users: Click the X next to any user to revoke access

Managed Users (Plex Pass feature): Create accounts for family members that live in your house. These appear as profiles on shared devices like a smart TV, similar to Netflix profiles.

  5. 5

    Optimize for remote streaming

When friends stream from outside your home, your server may need to transcode (convert) video to match their internet speed and device.

    To handle this well:

    1. Upload speed matters: Check your upload speed at speedtest.net. You need at least 10 Mbps upload per simultaneous remote stream for 1080p, 25 Mbps for 4K.

    2. Transcoding settings: In Settings > Transcoder, set "Transcoder quality" to "Prefer higher speed encoding" for better performance with multiple users.

    3. Hardware transcoding (Plex Pass): If your CPU supports Intel Quick Sync or NVIDIA NVENC, enable hardware transcoding. This lets you serve more simultaneous streams without overloading your CPU.

    4. Tell friends to set streaming quality: In their Plex app settings, they should set remote streaming quality to match their internet speed. "Original" quality avoids transcoding entirely if their connection can handle it.

  6. 6

    Troubleshooting common sharing issues

"My friend says the server is unavailable":
    - Check that your server is running and Remote Access shows green
    - Check your port forwarding rule
    - Your ISP may block port 32400. Try a different external port (e.g., 32401) and update the port in Plex > Settings > Remote Access > Manually Specify Public Port
"Video keeps buffering for remote users":
    - Your upload speed is too low. Ask them to lower streaming quality in their Plex app settings
    - Too many simultaneous streams. Limit concurrent streams in user settings
    "Friend cannot find my libraries":
    - Make sure they accepted the invite email
    - Check that you shared the correct libraries in Users & Sharing
    - They may need to sign out and back in to their Plex app

Alternative to port forwarding: Use Tailscale (free) to create a private VPN between your server and your friends' devices. No port forwarding needed. See our Tailscale guide for setup.
