ChatGPT subscribers can now open and edit Google Drive files from inside the chat

OpenAI is rolling out a Google Drive integration that finally closes the loop between AI assistance and where your work actually lives. ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise subscribers can now add Google Drive files directly to their ChatGPT Library and edit documents without bouncing between tabs.

This matters because context switching kills productivity. Until now, using ChatGPT to help with a Google Doc meant copying text back and forth, losing formatting, and manually syncing changes. That friction made AI assistance feel like extra work instead of a shortcut.

The integration works both ways. You can pull Drive files into ChatGPT's persistent Library feature, which means the AI remembers and can reference your documents across conversations. More importantly, edits you make in the chat can write directly back to the source file in Drive. It's the difference between ChatGPT as a disconnected brainstorming tool and ChatGPT as a layer inside your actual workflow.

This fits a broader pattern where AI companies are racing to embed themselves into existing productivity stacks rather than asking users to adopt new platforms. Microsoft obviously has Copilot baked into Office. Google has Gemini in Workspace. OpenAI, without its own document suite, has to integrate everywhere, and Drive is the logical starting point for knowledge workers.

The feature is limited to paid tiers, which makes sense as a retention play. Free users still get chat, but the real utility, the stuff that saves hours per week, sits behind the subscription.
