Anthropic is hiring an AI chip design team

Anthropic is getting into the chip game. The company behind Claude announced it's building an internal team to design custom AI chips, according to reporting from multiple tech outlets. This puts Anthropic on the same path as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, all of which have invested heavily in custom silicon to power their AI ambitions.

The move makes strategic sense. Right now, nearly every AI company is at the mercy of Nvidia's GPU supply and pricing. The company says the goal is to make its models run faster and more efficiently, which directly translates to lower inference costs and better user experience.

This is not just about saving money on cloud bills. Custom chips let you bake in optimizations that general-purpose GPUs can't match. Google's TPUs, for example, are tuned for the specific math operations that transformers rely on.
