Shopify says AI search is driving more traffic and sales, not replacing Google
Cech Tech Reviews

While publishers worry AI search will kill their Google traffic, Shopify just shared very different numbers. According to the company's Q2 earnings, AI-driven traffic and orders to Shopify stores tripled year over year. That's not cannibalization, that's acceleration.
The contrast matters. Publishers have watched ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions without sending clicks. But for e-commerce, AI search appears to work differently. When someone asks an AI assistant for product recommendations, they still need to buy somewhere, and those referrals are landing on Shopify storefronts in growing numbers.
This suggests AI search has different economics depending on what you sell. If your business model is pageviews and ads, AI keeping users in its own interface hurts. If your model is transactions, AI becomes a new top-of-funnel channel that still converts at your checkout.
The triple growth rate also hints that we're still early. As more people default to asking Claude, ChatGPT, or Perplexity for shopping advice instead of typing into Google, the stores that show up in those answers will capture disproportionate traffic. Shopify's infrastructure makes that easier than custom-built e-commerce sites.
For Shopify merchants, this is a signal to optimize for AI discovery, not just SEO. That means structured product data, clear descriptions AI can parse, and potentially working with platforms that feed product catalogs into LLM training or retrieval systems.
The risk is concentration. If a handful of AI platforms become the new Google for shopping, they'll have similar gatekeeper power. Shopify's scale helps, but individual merchants may find themselves dependent on algorithmic recommendations they don't control, just like they were with Google Shopping and Facebook ads.
What this means for you: if you sell products or services online, test how AI assistants surface your offerings. Try this prompt with ChatGPT or Claude: "I'm looking for [your product category]. What are the top options and where can I buy them?" If you don't appear, your product descriptions and site structure may need work. Consider adding detailed specs, use cases, and structured data that AI can easily extract and recommend.
